Being Who We Are

I’m working on a project that has me focusing on the principle of being intentional in defining who you are, what you stand for, and what you personally want to become. I think this is a critical step in living a fulfilling and meaningful life. When you truly know who you are and want to be, you can make better choices about your career, relationships, and other aspects of your life. You can also be more authentic and genuine in your interactions with others.

While working on this project a quote captured my attention, “Be who you is, ’cause if you ain’t who you is, you is who you ain’t.” The quote has been attributed to several different people including Josh Billings, Brennan Manning, Mark Twain, or Abraham Lincoln.

Regardless of who said it, the quote is a powerful reminder of the importance of being true to yourself.

Breaking down the quote, piece by piece, helps to gain a deeper understanding of its meaning:

  1. “Be who you is": This simple phrase encourages us to accept our unique qualities and quirks. Embracing our individuality and staying true to our beliefs and values is the first step towards personal fulfillment.

  2. “‘Cause if you ain't who you is”: Here, the quote highlights the consequences of not being true to oneself. When we pretend to be someone we're not, we often experience inner conflict, anxiety, and a sense of disconnection from our true selves.

  3. “You is who you ain't”: This part of the quote serves as a stark reminder that when we deviate from our authentic selves, we become someone entirely different. We lose touch with our core values, desires, and passions, often living a life that feels incongruent with our true nature.

Being who you are or who you want to become is not always easy. It takes courage and self-confidence. It sometimes takes admitting that we are wrong and making changes to who we are through self-reflection and self-improvement. But it is worth it. When you are true to yourself, you are living your best life. In a world filled with societal pressures, external influences, and a constant barrage of comparison, the wisdom encapsulated in the quote, "Be who you is, 'cause if you ain't who you is, you is who you ain't," serves as a guiding light. It reminds us to prioritize self-discovery and authenticity on our journey of personal growth. By being true to ourselves, we not only find inner peace and contentment but also inspire others to do the same.
